Liverpool Ladies captain Gemma Bonner faces up to three months on the sidelines with an ankle injury sustained against Brescia.

The defender was forced off with the problem midway through the second half of the 1-0 defeat to the Italian side in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Bonner has since undergone scans which have confirmed ligament damage and as a result she will miss the remainder of the season.

Last weekend was the final round of Women's Super League matches but Bonner will miss Sunday's Continental Cup semi-final clash with Notts County and the return tie with Brescia on Wednesday.

"To lose Gemma at such an important part of the season is a big blow and again highlights how unlucky we have been with injuries this season," manager Matt Beard told Liverpool's website.

"With losing Gemma that means we now have eight senior players who are unavailable through injury which makes our next two games even tougher, but hopefully we can bounce back from Wednesday's defeat with a victory against Notts County Ladies."
