Liverpool have made an approach to QPR to take defender Steven Caulker on loan for the remainder of the season, Sky sources understand.

Caulker is currently on loan at Southampton but has struggled for regular game time at St Mary's this season.

Liverpool have suffered a defensive crisis of late with frontline centre-backs Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho, Kolo Touré and Joe Gomez all missing Friday's draw against Exeter.

Manager Jurgen Klopp recalled Tiago Ilori from his season-long loan at Aston Villa, handing the Portuguese his Liverpool debut against Exeter alongside Jose Enrique as part of a makeshift centre-back pairing.

A deal for Tottenham academy graduate Caulker is only likely to be on loan until the end of the current campaign and not on a permanent basis.

He has made just eight appearances for Southampton - the last of which came against Liverpool in last month's 6-1 Capital One Cup quarter-final defeat - but only one of those has been a Premier League start back in August.

On that basis Liverpool hope QPR can cancel his loan deal in order for them to bring Caulker to Merseyside.

Toure is expected to be start Wednesday's Premier League visit of Arsenal with Lovren and Sakho also nearing a return to fitness.
