Where do Liverpool need to strengthen in the transfer window? And which players will they be after?

Here, we take a look at Jurgen Klopp's potential transfer targets and what the manager has had to say about his plans for the summer.

We also have expert opinion on what areas of their squad Liverpool need to address…

What do they need?

Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson: "Liverpool need a stronger spine to the team, by which I mean a top centre-back, a strong holding midfielder and a striker who is ready to produce goals.

"I think they've made a terrific coup in bringing in Dominic Solanke, but he's not the answer because they need experience. They also need a left-back. James Milner has done a terrific job filling in but he's obviously not a natural left-back and is better in other positions.

Offensively Liverpool can match most teams but they clearly need to improve at the back if they are to compete for the title.
Phil Thompson

"Offensively Liverpool can match most teams but they clearly need to improve at the back if they are to compete for the title, having conceded more goals than the three sides above them.

"Michael Keane and Virgil van Dijk are two I've mentioned before but there's going to be a lot of competition for them, although Mamadou Sakho would be a good bargaining tool after he impressed at Crystal Palace."

What has the manager said?

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: "I wish tomorrow [to have signings completed] but unfortunately that's not really likely. The best scenario is that you have them for the start of pre-season but I'm not sure if it will happen this time. It's different with all different players so we will see.

Who should Liverpool sign?
Who should Liverpool sign?

Liverpool will look to bolster their squad this summer, but who should they recruit? Vote here...

"That's not a big problem because we all know if they are fit and healthy we have a really strong squad and that means we could start with this squad. But that doesn't mean that I would prefer this, I would love to have them in as soon as possible."

"Money-wise? We have enough money. We are already pretty much done [on recruitment]. Now we have decisions that need to be done, negotiations or whatever. But it's all good and we are prepared and we will see what will work out and what won't."

Who will they target?

Liverpool have already confirmed they will sign Chelsea forward Dominic Solanke this summer, while they are closing in on deal for Roma winger Mohamed Salah.
