Liverpool are closing in on a €50m (£43.7m) deal for Monaco's defensive midfielder Fabinho, according to Sky sources.

The two clubs have agreed a fee for the Brazilian although a final deal is yet to be completed.

Sky sources understand Liverpool will pay €45m (£39.3m) plus a maximum of €5m (£4.3) in add-ons for the midfielder, who can also play in defence.

Fabinho is set to replace Emre Can, who is expected to leave Liverpool on a free transfer this summer after failing to sign a new deal with the club at the end of his contract.

Fabinho began his career with Brazilian side Fluminense but left the club without making a single senior appearance.

After signing a six-year deal with Portuguese side Rio Ave, Fabinho was loaned to Real Madrid where he played 30 games for the reserve team and once for the senior team in La Liga.

He was subsequently loaned to Monaco from 2013 to 2015 and joined the French club on a permanent deal ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.

Fabinho could become the second signing of the summer for Liverpool, who have already agreed a £48m deal for RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita.

Keita will officially join Liverpool on July 1 after a deal was agreed for the Guinea international last summer.

Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Lyon forward Nabil Fekir, although the France international has said he is "not close" to joining Liverpool and needs time to think about his future.
