He has struggled to get first team football and now looks like third choice at left back behind Christian Zeige and Djimi Traore.
"It is an amicable agreement between myself and the club. Liverpool have been very good to me over the years and my two spells at Anfield, they have agreed to let me go for nothing," said Staunton.
"Last year I forced my way into the first team, but then was injured and never got another chance. There was no indication of me getting regular first team football. I'm still only 31 and it's no use me sitting on the bench."
Staunton, speaking on A2Zsoccer.com, said he knew when Ziege arrived that he must leave in order to keep up his international career.
"I know I need first team football to have further international recognition to add to my 85 caps. Very soon I will be with a new club either on loan or on a permanent basis.
"I have loved all those years at Anfield and am grateful to the club for all the great days I had with them. There are no hard feelings on either side and I wish them the best in the future."
