The 26-year-old ace suffered a recurrence of his troublesome ankle problem in last weekend's FA Cup semi-final win over Wycombe Wanderers and he faces a race against time to play a role in Liverpool's chase for a Champions League place, a Uefa Cup final place and the FA Cup final against Arsenal.
The England international had hoped to return to action for next week's Uefa Cup semi final second leg with Barcelona but the injury is believed to be worse than first feared and he will miss the cruch games against Leeds United and former club Everton on Easter Monday.
Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier admitted that Barmby will undergo surgery on the ankle in the summer and that he was hopeful that he could return before the end of the campaign.
"Nick has a cast on his foot and is likely to be out for around three weeks," said Houllier.
"It would be premature at this stage to say his season is over but there are only five and a half weeks of the season left. I still hope he will be available to play before the end of the season," added Houllier.
Barmby is determined to recover and play in the final few matches for Liverpool as they try to add to their Worthington Cup success.
"All I can do is keep my fingers crossed," Barmby told the Daily Mail.
