The Spanish side, who are competing in their first year in Europe, are firm favourites to make it through to the final of the Uefa Cup in Dortmund as the hold a 5-1 advantage over Kaiserslautern with the second leg of the semi-final on Thursday.
Barcelona face Liverpool in the other semi-final with the tie delicately balanced after a 0-0 draw at Camp Nou and Cruyff feels that with the Merseyside club not knowing as much as the Catalan side does about Alaves, that they would stand a better chance of winning if they faced The Reds in the final.
"I prefer to face Liverpool," said Cruyff. "They may think that we are a small team, but Barcelona, however, know all about us and they will have much more respect than other teams.
"Against Liverpool we would have a better chance to win. Also Barcelona would approach the game as if it was the final of the Champions League and they would be harder to beat.
The former Manchester United ace also admitted that his side should approach the second leg of their tie with Kaiserlautern in the same way the played the first and not just defend their lead.
"We should play like we did in Alaves," said Cruyff. "If we try to defend from the start, we will suffer.
"A comeback is difficult, but not impossible. "We could get someone sent-off early and that would put us in trouble."
