REDS REOPEN GOMES TALKS

ITALIAN Serie A side Fiorentina have claimed that they have reopened talks with Liverpool over the £8 million transfer of Portuguese striker Nuno Gomes.

The cash-strapped Florence side have been desperately trying to salvage their situation by off-loading players and asking the playing staff to accept lower wages.

Marco Fanetti, assistant to the club's chief executive Luciano Luna has revealed that the collapse of Enrico Chiesa's proposed switch to Lazio has meant the Gomes could be the one sacrificed to bring in the much-needed Lire.

"Now that we have reached an agreement with Chiesa and he isn't going to Lazio, Gomes's departure is much more likely," said Fanetti. "We have resumed talks with Liverpool in the past few hours.

"There are many things in Gomes's contract to resolve, but the talks are now on more than ever."

Liverpool have lost the services of Michael Owen for a month with a hamstring injury, and any move for Gomes would rekindle the speculation surrounding Robbie Fowler's position at Anfield.

Fiorentina have already showed their willingness to sell their best players by getting rid of Francesco Toldo, Manuel Rui Costa and Tomas Repka, along with the imminent departure of one of their top strikers.

Gomes's departure for £8 million would represent a loss for the Viola who brought him in from Benfica for £12 million following his good showing in the European Championships in Belgium and Holland.

The 25-year-old has made 30 appearances for Fiorentina last season, managing to score nine goals.
