Tonge has been outstanding for The Blades this season, and boss Neil Warnock is already wary of big clubs eyeing up the 18-year-old.
He has already said that he wants to add to his young squad during the summer, and does not want to lose any of his young stars, but the lure of top-flight football could be too much to resist should an offer come in from Liverpool, or any other Premiership side.
Cooke arrived for training with The Blades on Tuesday, and Warnock will look at him in action in Wednesday's reserve clash with Oldham at Bramall Lane.
The 26-year-old was twice on loan at City rivals Sheffield Wednesday last season, and The Owls were keen to sign him permanently until the deal fell through.
Cooke has impressed in spells during his career, but has never performed consistently enough to nail down a permanent place in the side at Maine Road.
After loan spells at Wigan and Wednesday failed to produce a permanent deal, he is again trying his luck in the Steel City with United.
Warnock is looking to further strengthen his squad with Birmingham defender Jerry Gill.
Paul Devlin's move to St Andrews looks set to become a permanent one at the end of the season, and Warnock is looking to bring in the 21-year-old Gill as part of a swap deal.
