The 28-year-old was unveiled by Leeds following his cut-price £2.75 million move from Anfield, and both manager and new signing were delighted to be renewing acquaintances.
"It would have had to be something special for me to leave Liverpool because I enjoyed being at the club and the success even though I was not that involved," said Barmby.
"But when I heard Leeds were interested and I had the chance to work with Terry again it was the only option for me
"I'm a Yorkshire lad so to come to Leeds United and especially to work with Terry again is a great thrill for me
"The talent in the squad is second to none and I'm sure we will do very well this season.
Despite his lack of first team action under Gerard Houllier last season, Barmby insisted he did not regret his move across Stanley park from Everton.
"No, I don't regret going there, I don't consider winning five trophies being a waste of my time, the boss and the chairman were fantastic with me and I still have a lot of friends there.
"I learnt everything I know at Tottenham under Terry, and he is the biggest influence on my career.
"You can ask any player that has worked under him."
Former England boss Venables was also glad to have brought in Barmby for a bargain price, saying that his intelligence and flexibility would be a major advantage with the new transfer window.
"I had several people in mind Nicky one of them, take time hope we would get it done, delighted to have him," said Venables.
"We don't know what its going to be like with transfer window, flexible intelligent players to adjust, he is in that category, will be very important."
