The 22-year-old was wanted by Mali to play in Sunday's 2004 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Zimbabwe.
But Traore has decided to reject Mali's overtures and opted to press his claims for selection for France.
A further factor behind Traore's decision is the question of eligibility for Mali as he has won international caps for the French Under-18 side.
Malian Football Federation secretary general Yacoba Traore revealed the Reds defender had promised to play for the African nation but had put that pledge on hold.
He said: "He did give us a verbal promise to play for us in the future but I think he is hesitating because he might also be called up by the French."
