Midfielder Smicer faces a race against time to be fit for the final at the start of next month with assistant boss Phil Thompson revealing: "Vladi could be out for two or three weeks."
Meanwhile, Liverpool have received a boost with the news that goalkeeper Chris Kirkland will not need surgery to repair his torn cruciate knee ligament.
Kirkland sustained the damage during the FA Cup encounter with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park but American specialist Dr Richard Steadman has explained that the tear should heal naturally.
"It's really good news. We've spoken to Chris and he's happy with the verdict. No-one likes to go under the surgeon's knife," added Thompson.
