Director of sport Dietmar Beiersdorfer, who presented the club's authorities with a list potential signings, confirmed the plan.
"Yes, our main objective is to find a new playmaker," declared Beiersdorfer, whose team are on track to qualify for next season's Uefa Cup.
Hamburg's form depends very much on gifted Argentine schemer Rudolfo Esteban Cardoso (pictured), but the 34-year-old has often been sidelined through injury problems in the past few years and Beiersdorfer feels it is time to find a successor before Cardoso hangs up his boots in 2004.
During the winter break, the club were close to signing Fenerbahce's Haim Revivo, who had already passed a medical at AOL Arena, but the Israeli international finally changed his mind and joined Galatasaray.
Top of Hamburg's wish lists are reportedly Liverpool's out-of-favour Patrik Berger, Hakan Yakin from Swiss champions FC Basel, former German international Stefan Beinlich from Hertha Berlin and Nurnberg's David Jarolim.
Berger is definitely leaving Anfield when his contract expires in the summer, and looks likely to move abroad.
