Boumsong is a target for Liverpool, with Reds boss Gerard Houllier due to discuss the 23-year-old at a meeting later this month with his Auxerre counterpart Guy Roux.
French international striker Djibril Cisse is expected to be the chief topic at the talks but Roux is loathe to lose the jet-heeled forward and is more amenable to the departure of Boumsong.
The centre half has just a year remaining on his contract and Roux does not want to lose the highly-rated stopper for nothing.
But while Liverpool are admirers of Boumsong, it appears Marseille are favourites to land the defender, particularly following the Premiership club's failure to qualify for the Champions League.
Marseille hold a realistic chance of qualifying for Europe's elite tournament next term and that could swing the balance in their favour.
Speculation in France suggests Boumsong has already agreed a four-year contract with l'OM as he feels he would also have more first-team opportunities at Stade Velodrome compared to Anfield.
L'OM officials must now concur on a transfer fee with Auxerre, with Roux believed to be wanting in the region of é¼6 million (£4.25 million) for the Frenchman.
Marseille require summer reinforcements in their rearguard following Frank Leboeuf's decision to move to the Middle East and the continued speculation surrounding the future of Daniel van Buyten with the Belgian attracting the interest of Bayern Munich.
