Basel offered Yakin a new contract until 2007, but the skilful midfielder could not agree terms over the new proposal.
The 26-year-old playmaker has been linked with a move away from Basel for some time after impressing in last season's Champions League.
A number of top clubs including Liverpool, Celtic and Atletico Madrid have been credited with an interest in Yakin, but no firm offer was ever made for his services.
Yakin was believed to be close to a move to Atletico Madrid, but the transfer collapsed at the last minute and now French champions Lyon are believed to have joined the chase for Yakin and his brother Murat as they look to bolster their squad.
Yakin has a cut-price release clause in his current contract and the news that he has turned down a new deal could revive these clubs interest in him from a number of clubs.
Swiss sources claim Blackburn Rovers have also been alerted by Yakin's likely availability.
