The Australian international had looked lively in his second outing as the new Liverpool number seven, and had came close to opening his account for The Reds when he hit the bar with a 25-yard effort.
However, the former Leeds man was then forced off the pitch after 43 minutes with an injury, and worryingly hobbled off the pitch.
Although early indications are that it is just a dead leg, Gerard Houllier will be hoping that the problem does not turn out to be more serious and will not affect Kewell's pre-season too much.
During the game, Crewe stunned their visitors by taking the lead firmly against the run of play when David Vaughan glanced a header past first-half keeper Jerzy Dudek.
Michael Owen remained in the sharp form he had shown during the second half against Cologne and made it three goals in just 90 minutes of pre-season football when he levelled just before half time by heading in from a John Arne Riise corner.
Liverpool fans got an early glimpse of their two young French starlets as both Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle made an appearance.
Le Tallec appeared earlier than expected when he came on to replace Kewell just before the break, and he was joined by his French team-mate Sinama-Pongolle for the second half.
