Kewell picked up an ankle injury during Liverpool's pre-season friendly against Crewe Alexandra and there were worries that he could have damaged ankle ligaments.
The Australian international was forced to miss The Reds' tour of the Far East, but should be able to return to training next week.
Anfield boss Gerard Houllier says that he has been in contact with the club physio and is optimistic over Kewell's recovery.
"I phoned the physio today and obviously he cannot kick a ball," said Houllier.
"I imagine that at the end of the week, the beginning of next week, he should be able to join in training.
"There was no fracture, not even the rupture of ligaments that we had feared. It was just a strain thing."
Kewell could even return to action for Liverpool during their trip to Amsertdam for a pre-season tournament in eight days time, but he will not be rushed as Houllier's main aim is to see Kewell line up against Chelsea on the opening game of the new Premiership season next month.
