The 22-year-old claimed the number one position at Anfield last season but damaged his knee ligaments in an FA Cup clash with Crystal Palace in January and had to sit out the rest of the campaign.
The custodian is now fit again but had to make do with a place on the bench for the Reds' first league game against Chelsea as Jerzy Dudek started as first choice.
"I have only just come back from a serious knee ligament injury and thought it would be a while before I had a chance of being involved at this level," said the former Coventry City man.
"It was a great boost to my confidence to know the England manager has not forgotten about me during my absence."
He added: "It gave me a huge lift to see my name up there with so many great players."
Kirkland will battle it out with Paul Robinson and David James for the chance to play against Croatia on Wednesday but will not be disappointed if he is the one to miss out.
"I don't know whether I will get out on the pitch, but I will learn a lot just by being around the squad and enjoying the experience."
