Kirkland was forced to pull out of England Under-21s' defeat by Portugal on Tuesday night, and the diagnosed groin injury will sideline him for at least a month.
The former Coventry keeper sustained the injury in the pre-game warm-up, and the England medical staff have informed the shot-stopper he will need a four-week rest period.
Kirkland will be assessed by Liverpool's medical staff when he reports to their Melwood training ground on Wednesday, but the early signs are not good.
The youngster has had a torrid time in the last year, as he suffered a serious knee injury in January, just weeks after wrestling the number one shirt from Dudek.
Polish international Dudek has since returned to the team and performed admirably, with French youngster Patrice Luzi set to warm the bench against Blackburn at the weekend.
