Kirkland damaged a groin on England Under-21 duty last month, and Reds boss Gerard Houllier initially felt the former Coventry man would be sidelined for around eight weeks.
However, the youngster's injury has responded well to treatment - allowing him to make a return for the reserves on Tuesday.
Kirkland played the entire 90 minutes of The Reds' 1-0 win over Wolves reserves at Molineux on Tuesday, and reported no ill-effects in the immediate aftermath of the game.
Houllier will now hope Kirkland can press ahead and challenge Polish international Jerzy Dudek for the number one jersey at Anfield.
