Baros has been sidelined since breaking his ankle in September against Blackburn Rovers and feared it would be January at the earliest before he could return to training.
The Czech Republic striker admitted last month that he was ahead of schedule and had set his sights on a Christmas comeback for the beleaguered Reds.
Houllier has confirmed Baros is nearing a return to full training and believes the forward's availability will be a major boost.
"Baros should be back in training before the New Year and then it's a case of getting back his fitness," said Houllier.
"He should be able to do some ball work before Christmas and the New Year.
"We have a good squad but strikers are a different breed and Milan proved his worth last season."
For Saturday's trip to Wolves, Houllier will have Swiss defender Stephane Henchoz in his squad but is still without Jamie Carragher, Steve Finnan, Harry Kewell and Michael Owen.
Houllier is hoping for a victory at Molineux to use as a springboard to push up the Premiership table.
"I don't expect anybody to be back unfortunately," added Houllier. "We are still without Carragher, Baros, Finnan, Kewell and Owen.
"Henchoz came through okay in a game against Bolton in the reserves and will be travelling with us. That's good news.
"It's all very close at the moment. It's important to have good results over the Christmas period and we'll hope to do that.
"We enjoy working together, it's a good strong team bonding. The players like the challenge and we can beat any other team on their day.
"At the moment, it's not easy. We want to get more results and go on a string of form. It's an important game for both sides."
Meanwhile Reds full back Gregory Vignal will return from his loan stint at Rennes on Sunday after being frustrated at his lack of opportunities in France.
