Bastia are believed to have given up hope of signing Liverpool full back Gregory Vignal while Espanyol have stepped up their interest in the player.
The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Rennes, and Bastia had been hoping to bring in the Montpellier-born defender to replace Laurent Batlles.
The Stade Armand-Cesari-Furiani outfit are currently struggling financially and are expected to offload the assist ace for around é¼2 million (£1.4 million).
Bastia are fully aware of Vignal's ability, having taken the stopper on loan last season before joining Rennes this term.
La Liga outfit Espanyol have emerged as another club interested in securing his services, while the player himself is understood to favour a move to Barcelona.
Reds boss Gerard Houllier has opted to loan out Vignal to gain experience, but he could well be tempted to part company with him should an offer be received.
