The 22-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at French side Rennes but will now swap Le Championnat for La Liga.
The former Montpellier starlet met Espanyol officials at the club's Estadio Olimpico de Montjuic stadium on Thursday morning, and quickly reached an agreement to join the Catalans.
Espanyol vice president Joan Collet confirmed that a deal had been struck, declaring the accord 'definitive' and revealed that the player would be presented on Thursday afternoon, subject to a routine medical.
Boss Luis Fernandez is understood to have been very keen to bring in his left-sided compatriot as Pierre Wome, who was brought in during the summer to fill the full back berth, has failed to settle.
Fernandez is well aware of Vignal from his time in France, and one of his coaches at Espanyol, Jean Louis Gasset, worked with the player when they both at Montpellier.
Vignal becomes the second player to join the Catalans during the transfer window, following the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino from Bordeaux, and the club are still keen to recruit a striker before the window closes.
