The Reds had led through Leeds old boy Harry Kewell, but it took Milan Baros's first goal of the season to earn a point.
"Maybe we had more chances of winning than them. As no one won, at least football was the winner," explained Houllier.
"It was probably extremely entertaining. I think Leeds played well.
"I think maybe if it was a boxing game we would have won on points."
The Frenchman revealed he spoke with Kewell prior to his return to Yorkshire and was delighted with his opening wonder strike.
"We've talked about coming back," he said regarding the Aussie. "But I'm pleased as he scored a fantastic goal.
"We were all disappointed last Sunday, but that's in the past now. They can be proud about each other today.
"If they keep playing like that, we'll be there right till the end."
