The young Frenchman was carried out of Liverpool's reserve match with Birmingham City and it was feared that his season was over.
An Anfield spokesman confirmed that Le Tallec's season was not over, saying: "The player has suffered a tear to his left ankle ligaments and will be out of action for between three and four weeks."
The news is still a blow for Reds boss Gerard Houllier, who has had injuries to contend with all season.
Young Frenchman Le Tallec has played a bigger part than he expected this season as a result of those injuries, but will now miss a crucial part of the season.
He was hoping to play a part in Liverpool's Uefa Cup clash with Marseille on Thursday, but is now likely to miss both legs of the tie.
Houllier says that the injury is yet another blow to his squad.
"I spoke to him on the team coach and he was very disappointed," said Houllier.
"He told me he had not sustained an injury all season, then just three days before the Marseille game he does this.
"Maybe he will be okay for the second leg. This tie is a big thing for a young French player.
"I knew he was going to be a player, but I have been surprised by how quickly he has adapted to the physicality of The Premiership.
"When you say something to him he listens carefully and puts the lessons into practice quickly.
"I have been delighted with his progress and this injury is a disappointment both for him and for us."
