Uefa Cup preview

Liverpool, Newcastle and Celtic are all aiming to make the most of home advantage in the first leg of their Uefa Cup fourth round battles.

The Reds entertain Marseille on Thursday evening while Newcastle play host to Spanish opposition in the guise of Mallorca.

But arguably the most tantalising tie of the night is Celtic's meeting with Spanish giants Barcelona at Parkhead.

Celtic v Barcelona
Martin O'Neill's selection problems in attack have been compounded by an injury to Chris Sutton, who faces a race to be fit for the second leg due to an ankle complaint.

With John Hartson and Shaun Maloney already absent, O'Neill may deploy Bulgarian ace Stilian Petrov as an auxiliary striker alongside Henrik Larsson.

The Swedish star has caught the eye of Barcelona and will be aiming to impress his potential employers at Parkhead.

Johan Mjallby is also missing while O'Neill is sweating on the fitness of defensive duo Joos Valgaeren and Bobo Balde who are struggling with cramp and a knee injury respectively.

Former Rangers midfielder Giovanni van Bronckhorst has missed out on a return to Scotland after being ruled out with a knee injury.

His compatriot Patrick Kluivert is also absent with a knee problem while fellow Dutchman Edgar Davids is ineligible.

Inspirational defender Carles Puyol has been laid low with gastroenteritis and is hoping to recover in time for kick off.

Liverpool v Marseille
Liverpool are aiming to maintain their perfect record against French opposition, having won all five previous home encounters against raiders from across The Channel.

Anthony Le Tallec will not line up against the side from his homeland after damaging ankle ligaments in the reserves earlier in the week.

Fellow youngster Florent Sinama-Pongolle could figure, though, after coming through the reserve game with no difficulties.

Vladimir Smicer and Salif Diao are still missing as The Reds seek to build a crucial first leg advantage before the return in Stade Velodrome.

Fabien Barthez will make his first return to England since joining Marseille on loan from Manchester United earlier this season.

But David Sommeil will not play on English soil after he featured in this competition for Manchester City earlier in the season.

Newcastle v Mallorca
Sir Bobby Robson has received a triple injury boost ahead of the visit of Mallorca with Craig Bellamy, Kieron Dyer and Darren Ambrose all declared fit.

Bellamy and Dyer had been struggling with hamstring injuries, while Ambrose had a calf complaint, but are available although Lee Bowyer is again missing through suspension.

Olivier Bernard returns from a ban but fellow full back Andy Griffin remains sidelined with an Achilles problem.

Mallorca make the trip to St James' Park without Arnold Bruggink, who has a knee complaint, although defender Fernando Nino is fit after an ankle injury.

Serbo-Montenegrin striker Andrija Delibasic is ineligible having played for Partizan Belgrade in the UEFA Champions League this season, including in the qualifying round against Newcastle.
