The 26-year-old accepts that a number of players could be shipped out after a disappointing season which has seen Liverpool lag behind the top three in The Premiership.
Murphy himself has endured a frustrating season failing to hold down a regular place in the side and he knows his future and that of others could depend on how they finish the season with qualification for the UEFA Champions League a must.
"It's a massive time for the club and the team. From now until the end of the season will determine a lot in many ways for people's futures," admitted Murphy.
"I'm talking about the players. The staff's nothing to do with the players - the hierarchy decides on that - but the players can only do their best for their own futures. A lot of players here are fighting for their futures.
"A lot of players here are fighting for their futures, it is a simple as that. There are many with contracts up in two years, 18 months or less. A place in the Champions League and a successful run in the Uefa Cup will consolidate a lot of players' positions.
"But the reverse side of that is obvious. Failure in both competitions would do the opposite. That could happen to me or anybody else. No one's bigger than the club. It could happen to an awful lot of us."
Murphy has just over two years to run on his current deal and he is determined to prove he deserves a contract extension.
"The contract issue is not something that goes away. It's always there. It's running down and I'll have two seasons left at the end of the campaign.
"For me to finish the season strong and score some goals will benefit Liverpool and secondly me. If I can't maintain any form and finish the season poorly, I'm back facing an uphill battle next season to get back into the team and earn myself a new contract.
"As you know with Liverpool there are always players out there who want to be playing and even others in the squad now who want your place. I've got to make sure that I'm at the level I know I'm capable of."
