The Senegal star has been an expensive mistake with former manager Gerard Houllier splashing out £10 million to bring him from Lens.
New Reds boss Rafa Benitez immediately signalled Diouf had no further future at Anfield by not handing him a squad number and leaving him out of their North American tour.
Diouf has been dragging his feet over a move but he may now no longer have a choice but to leave.
The African does not want to give up the two remaining years of his lucrative Anfield contract, but the Merseyside club may make do with loaning him out for the season.
Premiership sides Portsmouth and Bolton have been interested but Spain is a more likely destination and Malaga now seem favourites after they claim to have held brief talks with the former African Player of the Year.
"Diouf was here and left Malaga almost convinced to sign for us," said the Spanish side.
"We would hope for a decision on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week."
Diouf looks set to join the exodus from Anfield as Benitez moulds his squad for the coming season.
A further player to leave Anfield is young defender Carl Medjani, who has joined French side Lorient on loan.
Benitez has watched Medjani in action and agrees that he has potential, but would prefer him to get a season of first team action under his belt instead of playing the reserves.
