The former Crewe man admitted he fears for his future at Anfield as he has only two-years left on his current contract.
Murphy failed to hold down a regular place in the side last season and he knows he must prove himself if he is to win a new deal.
"I've got two years left but in effect it's only one because by the time I get to the end of the season I'll probably know whether the boss fancies me and if I'll get a new contract," said Murphy.
"You've got to perform to stay at Liverpool, which is where I want to be.
"I don't want to go through what I went through last season.
"The season covers 55 or 60 games and I started only 28 or 29 last year. I don't think I could go through that again."
The England international also aimed a swipe at former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier, feeling he was unlucky not to have featured more often last season.
"I felt a little bit hard done by last season and I don't mind saying so. I thought I should have been playing more games than I did," added Murphy.
"When you're on the sidelines so often it doesn't just affect your football it affects your home life. You're just miserable all the time."
