Real Madrid striker Michael Owen has blasted Liverpool for their treatment of Danny Murphy.Real Madrid striker Michael Owen has blasted former club Liverpool for their treatment of Danny Murphy.
Rafa Benitez's arrival at Anfield signalled the end of Owen's time on Merseyside and also led to the sale of Murphy to Charlton.
Whilst Owen agrees that the time was right for him to leave Liverpool, he is more scathing of the club's treatment of his former team-mate.
''Danny got told the week before I left that they didn't want him and he could speak to other clubs,'' said Owen.
''Nasty things like that happen in football.
''Sometimes you don't want to leave a club but you don't get a choice.''
Owen could make his Madrid debut on Sunday against Real Mallorca but concedes that he first has to secure a spot in the side.
''I'm not guaranteed a place but I wasn't with Liverpool or England,'' he continued.
''There are obstacles in the way but there can be injuries, suspensions and plenty of doors can open.
''You've got to take the chance when you get it, like I've always done, and I hope I'll do the same here.''
