The Australian winger has been plagued by persistent injury problems throughout his Anfield career, but was hoping to return to action against Fulham on Saturday.
Kewell has been out of action since December with tendonitis in his Achilles, and he was forced to miss Saturday's win over Fulham as the problem continues to hamper his progress.
The 26-year-old is still struggling to overcome the problem and is now a big doubt for The Reds' UEFA Champions League tie with Bayer Leverkusen.
"Harry's struggling a bit but the club are doing everything they can to get him right," Kewell's agent Bernie Mandic told the Sydney Daily Telegraph.
"He's had scans which don't show anything substantial but despite his best efforts at the moment he simply can't shake off the discomfort and get back on the park.
"Harry was desperate to be fit for the Fulham game as part of his plan to play himself in for the Leverkusen match."
Rafa Benitez has had severe injury problems all season, but was hoping to have Kewell available for the return of European football, along with the Carling Cup final against Chelsea at the end of the month.
