The powerful midfielder has not played a game for The Reds since being signed from Bayern Munich nearly two years ago.
Diarra has spent the season on loan with French side Lens, and it looked as though he would make the move permanent at the end of the season.
Lens were happy to take up their option to sign him in May, while Diarra was keen to remain in France after enjoying a successful season.
Diarra was happy with his displays which have seen him included in the French national squad for the first time.
However, it now seems that Reds boss Rafa Benitez has had favourable reports of Diarra and could offer him an Anfield lifeline.
Diarra still has two years left on his Liverpool contract and the chance of regular outings for the UEFA Champions League finalists could be a great draw to him.
The 23-year-old will now his fate shortly, but his proposed move to Lens now seems to be uncertain once again.
