The Liverpool midfielder has already missed the start of pre-season training because he was recovering from a groin injury.
Kewell was forced off during the memorable UEFA Champions League victory over Milan with the groin problem.
The Australian underwent an operation on the problem soon after the final and it was hoped he would be fully fit for the start of the new season.
However, Kewell has suffered a new injury setback and he now needs to undergo a hernia operation.
The injury is likely to see Kewell sidelined for six weeks and means he will be missing for the kick-off of The Premiership on August 13.
Kewell has been plagued by a series of ailments over the last year and this new injury is a major blow to his hopes of holding down a regular place in Rafa Benitez's plans.
