Stephen Warnock has revealed his surprise at being named in the England squad.Liverpool left back Stephen Warnock has revealed his surprise at being named by Sven Goran Eriksson in England's squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The Reds defender, who has impressed many with his displays at the start of the campaign, was aware of the speculation he could make the Three Lions squad.
However, the 23-year-old, who has spent time on loan with Coventry, was informed he was in the squad and is now looking forward to impressing for his country.
Warnock was particularly down after missing out on last year's UEFA Champions League final last season against Milan, but is delighted Rafa Benitez has put his faith in him.
"I can't quite believe it. I've been reading the papers during the past week and they have been saying I could get a call-up, but I wasn't so sure," Warnock told the club's official website.
"Then I got a text message from The FA telling me I'm in the squad. For me personally it's brilliant and certainly goes some way towards making up for the disappointment of last season.
"Of course I was made up that we won [the final], but I was really upset to miss out on the final. I've thought long and hard this summer about where I need to improve and luckily the manager [Benitez] has put his faith in me.
"I've just got to establish myself as the first choice left back before anything else, but this England call-up is certainly a massive boost for my confidence.
"I'm looking forward to showing what I can do. Ashley Cole is obviously the first choice left back, but apart from maybe Wayne Bridge and Paul Konchesky, there are perhaps not many other left backs around."
