Liverpool's Jermaine Pennant has revealed that he was left baffled by the referee during their draw in the UEFA Champions League at Porto on Tuesday.
The Reds winger was sent off during the match for two bookable offences, and although he admits he must learn from the incidents, Pennant insists the official got them wrong.
"I didn't think it was the right decision to send me off," he told the Liverpool Echo.
"The referees are harsher in Europe and I was baffled by him all night.
"I definitely have to learn from the fact there's a difference in how the referees approach the games in Europe."
Pennant's second yellow card came in the second half as he caught Porto's Fucile whilst sliding to keep the ball in play.
But the former Birmingham man is adamant that the referee should not have given him his marching orders for the challenge.
"It wasn't a yellow card because it wasn't a serious foul," he said. "The whistling from the crowd influences the referee and makes his decision easier, probably.
"In the Premiership, it wouldn't have been anymore than a goal kick to the other side, not even a free-kick."
Pennant also thanked his Liverpool team-mates for holding onto the draw and not succumbing to the Porto pressure.
"It was agony watching the game in the dressing room. I was just thinking 'come on lads, stick it out for me'.
"They deserve full credit for getting the draw with 10 men, which obviously makes it a lot more difficult."
