Villa midfielder remains a Liverpool target

Aston Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell is hopeful that Gareth Barry will remain in the Midlands this summer. The England international is Liverpool's top transfer target, but the two clubs have been unable to agree on a fee. Villa are holding out for £18million for Barry, a sum which Anfield chief executive Rick Parry has stated is too high. Sidwell, who only joined Martin O'Neill's side from Chelsea this summer, wants his fellow midfielder to stay put as the club look to break into the top four in the Premier League.

Fantastic

He told Sky Sports News: "You don't want your best players to leave, especially with the club where we're at at the moment. "We want to be pushing on and to do that you need to keep all your best players and bring players in. "If he stays it is fantastic, but if it does happen that he does go, we'll wish him all the best. But hopefully he will stay. "In any walk of life, any person would want to better themselves and play at the highest level. "If that happens for him, fantastic, but if it doesn't he'll still be a legend at Villa Park and he'll be there for the course."
