Newcastle's loan bid turned down by Anfield outfit

Newcastle's audacious attempt to bring Andy Carroll back to St James' Park on loan with a view to a permanent deal has been rejected by Liverpool. The Magpies saw their opening bid to land the striker they sold to the Merseyside club for £35million in January 2011 turned down by the Anfield outfit. However, it is understood that the Reds could be willing to listen to offers for the England international should the North East outfit follow up their initial interest. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers' admission that he could be prepared to let Carroll leave on loan earlier this week has sparked much debate over his long-term future, with AC Milan and West Ham linked with his services.

Form

The striker has made it known he has no desire to call time on his brief Anfield career this summer and would only 'reluctantly consider' a loan switch. Carroll appeared to be finding some form towards the end of last season and earned a place in Roy Hodgson's squad for Euro 2012, scoring in the group stage victory over Sweden. But his overall career with Liverpool has not been a success, with just six Premier League goals in 42 appearances to date. Newcastle boss Alan Pardew already has Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse and Shola Ameobi in his attacking arsenal, while the addition of Carroll would add a different dimension to their forward line.
