The Merseysiders currently occupy fourth spot in the Premier League as they challenge for a spot in next season's UEFA Champions League.
With Brazil midfielder Lucas expected to miss two months with a knee ligament injury, he feels it's important to have a strong squad in order to compete with the big teams.
The Reds had reportedly been considering a loan bid for the Holland international and when asked by ESPN Brazil about interest in the 29-year-old former Manchester City man, Lucas said: "He is a good player and produced many good performances at Manchester City.
"If he comes it will be good for the squad because it's important to have a strong squad.
"I believe that if anyone comes who plays in my position it will not be because of my injury but rather to strengthen the squad."
Meanwhile, Lucas is confident he will be fit before the end of the season and hopes to make the squad for the World Cup, adding: "I am working hard to be back as soon as possible and do well for the club.
"Hopefully I will have the luck to play for the national team in the World Cup."
De Jong made 139 appearances for City, with whom he won the title in 2012 and has played 69 times for Holland.
