Premier League: Who's your club's bogey team?

Graphic

After defeating Arsenal last weekend, Chelsea's trip to struggling Newcastle seems like an ideal opportunity for the Premier League title holders to continue their resurgence.

But Newcastle are something of a bogey team for Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho: he's never won at St James' Park in five Premier League visits.

Just last season a Papiss Cisse double ended the Blues' undefeated start to the campaign and Mourinho has only managed to take two points from a possible 15 at Newcastle.

The bogey-team phenomenon is something football fans across the land will be familiar with. Here we take a look at where Premier League teams regularly come unstuck…

Arsenal have lost 21 Premier League games against Manchester United - more than they have against any other team. They've also conceded more goals against United (66) and scored more own goals against them (five) than any other team.

However, more surprisingly the Gunners have won just one of four home Premier League games against Swansea, losing two. Their problems away to Stoke are well documented - they have won just once in seven trips to the Britannia, losing four times.

Aston Villa lost their hotly-contested derby with West Brom last weekend but at least they kept 11 men on the pitch. The Villans have had four red cards against West Brom, their joint-highest figure against one club. They've also had four players dismissed against Arsenal in the Premier League.

When it comes to facing Manchester United, Villa's record is particularly poor. They have won just two of their 24 home games against United and lost 78 per cent of their Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford. In fact, trips to Manchester are rarely happy experiences for Villa fans - the club have also lost 78 per cent of away games at Manchester City.

Bournemouth are competing in their first Premier League campaign. However, their 1-0 defeat at Anfield earlier this season followed a familiar trend. The Cherries have never beaten Liverpool in any competition (D2 L5).

While Jose Mourinho's record against Arsene Wenger is much talked about - the Frenchman has only beaten his Portuguese counterpart once in 15 meetings - Chelsea actually have a relatively poor record against Arsenal in the Premier League. The Blues have lost more games (18) and conceded more goals (60) against Arsenal than they have against any other current Premier League side.

As well as Mourinho's poor record at St James' Park, he has also never won at the Emirates, collecting a draw on each visit to Arsenal's new ground.

Crystal Palace's Premier League bogey team is Southampton - they haven't beaten them in 12 attempts (D4 L8). Alan Pardew will hope to buck that trend when the teams meet at Selhurst Park in December.

However, Palace also have a poor record at home to Liverpool, having conceded more goals on their own patch to the Reds in the Premier League than they have against any other side (14).

While Palace have a poor record at home to Liverpool, their visits to Goodison Park prove far more fruitful. Everton have lost a higher percentage of home games against Crystal Palace than they have against any other side in the Premier League (67 per cent).

A less surprising stat is that Everton have been issued more red cards in matches against their neighbours Liverpool than any other side in the Premier League. In fact, the 13 reds Everton players have picked up against Liverpool is at least six more than against any other opponent.

Leicester smashed four goals past Sunderland on the opening weekend of this season. It's been a different story when the Foxes have travelled to the North East, though. Leicester have scored just one goal in five Premier League visits to Sunderland.

Everton are Leicester's true Premier League bogey team, though - they've won just one of their 18 meetings with them.

Away days at Manchester City and Chelsea have been particularly unproductive for Liverpool in the Premier League. The Reds have won just three times in 18 visits to Man City and on four of their 23 trips to Stamford Bridge. Their 17 per cent win rates at those grounds are the lowest against any team they've played more than 10 times.

Trips to Tottenham have been unpleasent for some Liverpool players, too - the Reds have scored four own goals at White Hart Lane, the most they have scored at any Premier League away ground.

Manchester City have lost more games (22), conceded more goals (61) and been shown more red cards against Arsenal than they have any other team. They've also lost 22 times to Chelsea in the Premier League.

However, Leicester City have emerged as a surprise bogey team - in fixtures played at Manchester City, at least. Man City have lost 75 per cent of home Premier League games to the Foxes (three out of four), only scoring their first home win against them last season.

No team has won more games (six) or scored more goals (27) against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League than Chelsea.

United have also been shown nine red cards against Liverpool - three more than they have against any other Premier League side.

Swansea are Newcastle's bogey team - the Magpies have lost 67 per cent of their Premier League meetings with the Welsh side, their highest loss rate in the division.

However, Newcastle's travelling fans have seen more goals conceded at Anfield than any other Premier League ground. Liverpool have netted 50 times when Newcastle have been the visiting team.

Norwich City boss Alex Neil was delighted with his side's 1-1 draw at Liverpool last weekend - and the result certainly bucked a recent trend for the Canaries. Norwich have conceded 2.67 goals per game on average against Liverpool in the Premier League.

However, away days at Newcastle have been tough, too. Norwich have lost five of their six visits to St James' Park in the Premier League, drawing on the other occasion.

Southampton drew 0-0 with West Brom earlier in September and goalscoring against the Baggies has proved a problem for the south coast side in the Premier League. Southampton have scored just five goals in 11 Premier League meetings with West Brom - an average of 0.45 per game.

However, it is Southampton's defending which has been the issue on trips to Arsenal. Saints have never kept a clean sheet in 16 Premier League visits to the Gunners.

Stoke have been shown more red cards against Sunderland (four) than they have against any other team, however, defending has been the problem in home games against West Ham in the Premier League.

Stoke have not kept a clean sheet in any of their six home matches with West Ham - only against Manchester United have they gone more games without one (seven).

Sunderland supporters have had little joy when they've followed their team to Tottenham. The Black Cats have lost 12 of their 14 visits to White Hart Lane, winning once and drawing on the other occasion.

Games against Manchester United have also been dogged by a string of own goals from the Sunderland players. They've put the ball in their own net six times against United - more than against any other team in the Premier League.

Tottenham and Everton have become bogey teams for Swansea in the Premier League. The Welsh side have failed to beat either, losing seven of eight against Spurs and five of nine against Everton.

Swansea have also failed to score in any of their three home meetings with Southampton.

Tottenham have not won in 23 visits to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. Their record at Chelsea reads: played 23, won none, drawn eight, lost 15. A 3-0 defeat away to the Blues last season maintained that streak.

Tottenham also average a red card once every three games against Stoke in the Premier League. They've had five players dismissed in 15 games against the Potters.

Watford have conceded more goals against Everton in the Premier League than they have against any other team (14) - with the two they conceded on the opening day at Goodison Park contributing to that total.

The Hornets have failed to score in four previous meetings with Aston Villa.

West Brom have never kept a clean sheet in 18 previous Premier League meetings with Arsenal. The teams next meet in November. Can Tony Pulis - renowned for the defensive organisation of his sides - finally help the Baggies shut out their north London opponents?

West Brom aren't the only Premier League team with a poor record against Manchester United - but theirs is particularly bad. They haven't won any of their nine home games against United (D2 L7), conceding three goals per game in that run (27 in total).

West Ham have lost 10 Premier League home games against Everton and Chelsea. They've only lost more times at Upton Park to Arsenal (11).

The Hammers have also been shown five red cards at Spurs. That's at least two more than they have picked up away to any other Premier League team.
