Roma want Wojciech Szczesny to stay beyond the end of his current loan deal from Arsenal, according to the club's sporting director Walter Sabatini.

Szczesny joined Roma on a season-long loan from Arsenal during the summer, but the Poland international has already stated his intention to return to the Gunners next season.

However, Sabatini has revealed Roma want the 25-year-old to stay in the Italian capital beyond the end of the current season, despite suggesting a deal with Arsenal could prove difficult.

"We are working on it and would like to keep Szczesny, but knowing Arsenal it will be difficult to achieve that," said Sabatini.

"In any case, Roma are already covered in that role for next season. Who did we get? I would never tell you that!"

Szczesny has already spoken about his future during his time with Roma, claiming it would be his "dream" to return to Arsenal.

Speaking to Sky in Italy, he said: "If a year ago someone had told me that I would go to Rome I would have thought it was impossible.

"I saw Arsenal as my whole life and I do not hide that is still my dream [to return].

"For me it is a family, I owe so much to those people that if I were to be given a chance I would play for them [again]."

It's not been the easiest start to life in Italy for Szczesny. He impressed in Roma's 2-1 victory over Serie A champions Juventus, but was caught out from 35 yards during his side's 3-2 Champions League defeat by Bate.
