Vieira, who was banned for six games earlier in the season for spitting at West Ham defender Neil Ruddock, received a booking for the incident on Sunday and Taylor felt this punishment was lenient.
"If that had been in the street with a policeman about, then I think Vieira would have had to accompany the policeman to the station," the former England manager said.
"Helguson is not the type of player to go down without contact. If I felt he hadn`t been touched, I would take action. I stand by the boy completely."
Arsene Wenger leapt to the defence of his player saying: "Patrick was very upset. He racted and he should not have done so, but he didn`t butt the player.
"If he had, I don`t think Helguson would have been able to play any more. I think he touched him with his head."
