Leicester City shot-stopper Ian Walker has been called up to replace the Leeds man in the squad and will act as cover for first choice David Seaman and his Highbury team-mate Richard Wright will be promoted to second choice in Martyn's absence.
Walker's surprise call-up is due to injuries to West Ham's David James and Leeds' Paul Robinson.
Martyn sustained the injury in training on Monday and has now returned to Leeds for treatment in the hope that he can be fit for this weekend's Premiership clash against league leaders Bolton.
Football Association spokesman Adrian Bevington said: "Nigel Martyn has returned to Leeds after tweaking his knee in training yesterday (Monday).
"The decision was taken last night for him to return to Leeds and, in his absence, Ian Walker has been called up to the squad."
