The Saints boss may decide to off-load the South American hit-man in the summer, especially if he can increase his value with an impressive showing in Japan and Korea.
The bulk of the work involved in getting the player to England was done before Strachan took over as manager of the South Coast side.
"I was surprised to learn that he had played because he has not been fit to train for us recently," declared Strachan.
"I have hardly seen him play for six months.
"I will have to speak to his interpreter and find out how he feels second-hand.
"But things are looking rosy for him for the World Cup," he told the club's official website.
The Saints have been credited with an interest in Arsenal winger Jerome Thomas, although Beveren and Queens Park Rangers are also keen on the 19-year-old's services.
Arsenal do not want to let him go, although they are believed to be willing to allow the wide man to spend a lengthy period away from Highbury on loan.
Meanwhile, young Australian Darren Broxton has had a trial with Leyton Orient, after being released by The Saints.
