The game was all over as a contest as Arsenal showed their class against the new boys to race into a 3-0 lead.
Ashley Cole gave the home side a dream start with the opener after just three minutes with a blistering strike from just inside the penalty area.
Arsenal's right-sided full back Lauren got into the act doubling the lead in the 21st minute with a close-range finish after being fed by Kanu.
The home side then netted their third just three minutes later to put the result beyond doubt with a neat finish by Sylvain Wiltord after he was sent clear by Thierry Henry.
West Brom got an unexpected lifeline with a bizarre goal from Scott Dobie after 51 minutes.
Cole and David Seaman got involved in a misunderstanding at the back and the ball bounced off Cole into the path of Dobie and his weak shot somehow squeezed under Seaman.
Arsenal then seemed to lose concentration to let the visitors back into the game, but they managed to come out unscathed despite three good chances for the visitors.
Wiltord finally killed off stubborn West Brom with the fourth and his second of the night after 76 minutes with another cool finish after good work by Cole down the left.
Jason Roberts got the goal his endeavour deserved three minutes from time to give West Brom renewed hope with his first goal of the season.
The goal stung Arsenal into action and Thierry Henry crossed for substitute Jeremie Aliadiere in the final minute to hit the fifth and his first goal for the club.
Tottenham joined their North London neighbours at the top of the table with an impressive 1-0 win over Charlton at The Valley.
Welsh international Simon Davies hit the all-important goal for the visitors after just seven minutes to give Spurs all three points.
