Ajax themselves admitted in December that there was English interest in the classy Romanian - although they would not reveal who it was.
Real and a number of Italian clubs have now reportedly become very worried by Arsenal's interest in Chivu, which could prompt a rethink on their policy on the youngster.
Arsene Wenger has just witnessed at first hand what the 22-year-old is capable of, after the Romania star marshalled Ajax's back-line wonderfully in their two recent Champions League draws with The Gunners.
Wenger has recently sold Matthew Upson and is not particularly well endowed at centre half, with Martin Keown just ahead of Pascal Cygan in the pecking order to partner Sol Campbell.
There is no doubting Campbell's ability, but 36-year-old Keown is nearing the end of his top-flight career and Cygan has failed to live up to expectations at Highbury since his summer move from Lille.
Chivu would not come cheap should Arsenal decide to make a move, but he would still represent a fantastic piece of business for which ever team eventually lands him.
The Romanian is expected to be the one major name to be sold by Ajax this summer, which would allow them to hold on to other members of their squad such as Rafael van der Vaart and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
