Mexes flattered by Highbury interest

AUXERRE defender Philippe Mexes has given Arsenal more encouragement in their bid to sign him by admitting he is flattered to be linked with the North London side.

The 21-year-old is one of Europe's hottest properties and Guy Roux is desperate to keep hold of him but knows the lure of a move to The Premiership may prove too much for the stopper to resist.

Arsene Wenger is desperate to secure Sol Campbell a long-term partner with the ever-green Martin Keown nearing the end of his career and Frenchman Pascal Cygan failing to convince.

The Highbury boss sees Mexes as the ideal partner for the England centre back after the defender helped bring the Coupe de France back to Stade Abbe-Deschamps at the weekend.

Mexes told L'Equipe: "It's flattering but we'll see. When you leave it's to progress. I'll choose the club where I'll feel the best."
