The 24-year-old has been dubbed the 'new Lilian Thuram' and a number of top clubs have been credited with an interest in obtaining his signature.
Some sources have gone so far as to suggest Arsene Wenger has already set up a deal to bring Abidal to Highbury in the summer, although this would appear to be rather premature, to say the least.
"My objective is to join a big French club or foreign team but it is true that I have a preference for abroad," the Lille star told Foot Exclusif.
"In any case, I feel ready to take the step in my head. But I do not want to leave, it does not matter how and doesn't matter where.
"I have a small weakness for the English game because I see a lot of French players doing well in this country.
"But, if a big Spanish, French or Italian club shows themselves, I would take time to consider them.
"It all depends on the opportunities but, logically, I would sign for a big French club first before attempting my luck in a foreign country."
