Ipswich Town boss Joe Royle has denied an interest in Southampton's Chris Baird as Justin Hoyte is linked with a move to Portman Road.
The former Manchester City manager has targeted a Premiership defender in a loan deal, leading to something of a guessing game going on in Suffolk regarding the identity of the player.
Baird, left out of Southampton's tour of Sweden, was forwarded as the ideal candidate.
However, Royle told Sky Sports News: "I haven't spoken to Southampton and we've made no approach for Baird.
"If we can, we'll find the right player to come in and join the squad and get first team experience.
"We're still looking at that player but there is no timescale to it. There's no rush."
Arsenal defender Hoyte, an England Under-21 international, is the latest name in the frame.
Local newspaper reports claim that talks are underway with the Premiership champions and that a deal could be brokered before Monday's friendly with Osasuna.
