The Brazilian midfielder is stalling on signing a new deal at Highbury and, with just six months left on his current deal, has become a target for a host of Europe's leading clubs.
Barcelona, Valencia and Manchester United are all understood to be monitoring his situation, and Real have now confirmed their interest.
It is understood that the player will hold crunch talks with Arsenal in January to try and thrash out a new contract, and if they prove unsuccessful will move on a free transfer at the end of the season.
However, Real's poor form and unsatisfactory league predicament could see them launch a raid in January.
Los Merengues seem certain to bring in new faces during the transfer window and, in addition to Edu, are preparing moves for Brazilian Robinho and France international Benoit Pedretti.
Real director of sport Emilio Butragueno confirmed all three were in the club's sights, but remained coy over whether the club would move for them during the forthcoming transfer window.
"With regards to Robinho, we all know what his worth is," declared Butragueno.
"The other two players mentioned are of interest and in the future they could be a part of the club's plans."
