Arsene Wenger is not worried about the Jose Antonio Reyes saga.Arsene Wenger says that he is not worried about Jose Antonio Reyes saying that he would like to join Real Madrid during a radio hoax.
The young Spaniard was caught by a Spanish radio station, who phoned him pretending to be Real's sporting director Emilio Butragueno.
A bullish Wenger told reporters on Friday that he was not worried about the comments - insisting that Reyes could become one of the best in the world at Arsenal.
Wenger was determined to play down the incident, and he said Reyes was just feeling down when he said he was homesick.
"A young player is sometimes up and down and he has been caught when he is disappointed at not playing in a few big games," said Wenger
"But it does not take away from the challenge that we have, both Reyes and myself, in front of us to make him one of the best players in the world, and I think he can achieve that. Simple as that.''
Wenger says that he is yet to speak to Reyes about the incident, saying it is normal for a player to have a boyhood dream of joining a club in their own country.
"I haven't spoken to him about it because I just heard about the whole story today.
"I believe I could catch out every journalist in here by saying something that his company would not be happy with - it is too simple to do things like that.
"It is normal that joining a big club of your country can be one of your dreams from your youth, it does not mean that he does not have another dream to come here - because it was his dream to play for Arsenal.
"I don't have to say anything against the fact that every player has, in his home country, a club that he would like to play for."
As for the story disrupting his side's preparations for their trip to Crystal Palace on Monday, Wenger dismissed any talk of his squad being unsettled.
"We have a great spirit inside the club this is basically a non-story but unfortunately we have to live with non stories,'' he concluded.
"But they are still non stories and it has nothing to do with the vision we have for our club.
"There is no distraction at all because it is just a minor, minor incident in our week.
"Reyes has made a statement yesterday and that is available to you - we have more problems with people who want to join us than those that want to leave us."
